MS: id Software’a dahil olmadan önce, stüdyo nasıl bir yerdi senin gözünde?
MS: Cthulhu temasının DOOM TDA ve Revelations’a dahil edilişi üzerine konuşmak isterim.
Mini not: Neon Genesis Evangelion, 1995’te yayınlanan bir mecha anime serisidir.

ENGLISH VERSION
AN INTERVIEW WITH NATHAN ELMER
Nathan Elmer is one of the talented artists who worked on DOOM The Dark Ages and its Revelations DLC. These days, he’s freelancing, mostly taking on projects with Ironwood Studios. Since we had the chance, we wanted to sit down with him for a chat about art, AI, the eerie Cthulhu-inspired themes, DOOM itself, and of course, id Software.
DOOM The Dark Ages has quickly become one of the best single-player FPS titles in recent years. And the freshly released Revelations DLC? Some fans even say it surpasses the main game — a true masterpiece. Both The Dark Ages and Revelations feel like games that push the DOOM series into bold new territory.
So here we are, joined by one of the key artists behind these projects, Nathan Elmer. We’re grateful he made time for us in the middle of such a busy schedule.
Enjoy the read!
Mahmut Saral (MS): Briefly, who is Nathan Elmer and what do you enjoy doing? As a child, were you interested in paper and pencils, or were you more into toys, for example? Can you introduce yourself shortly?
Nathan Elmer (NE): Hi I’m Nathan – I work as a concept artist and illustrator in the video game and animation industries. I grew up loving games and movies and always enjoyed the challenges and reward of making art. I think as I’ve grown up i’ve embraced my free will and kept exploring art, video games, game dev, tabletop, MTG etc. It’s all so fun!

MS: As an artist, what do you take with you when you go out? What are the things that are always in your bag?
NE: I usually have my notebook in my bag, organising thoughts or sketching out some ideas
MS: What was id Software like in your eyes before you joined?
NE: One of the goated developers, beloved.
MS: In the past, id Software had amazing artists like Kevin Cloud, Adrian Carmack, and Kenneth Scott. Did you have a favorite among them or any other?
NE: I wouldn’t say I have a favorite, but we drew a lot of inspiration from the original artists.
MS: Can you tell us about the process of how you joined id Software?
NE: I applied for the position online from Australia, went through video interviews and eventually accepted an offer. Then me and my family relocated to Dallas for the work.
MS: What was your daily work routine at id Software?
NE: Usually I keep my hours pretty consistent. Get in have a coffee, do some warmup drawings or painting, work on my current tasks, break for lunch, continue on tasks. Check in my art director, leads or other departments when needed. Go to a meeting if scheduled. Nothing too crazy!
MS: You know, sketches and drawings used to be done on paper. Clay sculptures were made and photographed to be transferred into the game. In recent years, digital systems have become very prominent. So what is your choice, how do you work? In recent years, do you start on paper and then move to digital, or do you work entirely digitally? Can you describe your workflow?
NE: Sometimes I find it nice to keep lose and sketch my initial ideas with penicl and paper. From there I usually develop them in photoshop with a wacom tablet. I’ll use Blender if I need some 3D to support my concept.
MS: You have many wonderful drawings. Honestly, I’m curious how these come to life. Of course, you exchange ideas in meetings, but beyond that, what else is there? For example, looking specifically at DOOM The Dark Ages, there are many different motifs. When designing Purgatory, there were snowy details. In another section, there were massive bones covered in dust. These are radical works for the DOOM series. Hugo Martin once said in an interview during DOOM Eternal that they wanted to expand the DOOM universe with previously unseen environments. So, for The Dark Ages and Revelations, what were your thought processes, preferences, and inspirations?
NE: Thank you! I think we were just trying to continue that attitude into Dark Ages and Revelations. Whenever I get a new task I want to make it as cool as possible and try to find something unique. I take direction from my Leads/directors then I research – picking through real world video, images, stories. Also exploring fiction to see what has been done and how we can take ideas further or in a new direction. Goal is always to make something rad, that works in the universe and game, and that is viable for the team to make.
MS: I’d like to talk about the inclusion of the Cthulhu theme in DOOM TDA and Revelations. Many players, upon seeing the Cthulhu theme, felt hopeful for Quake, but of course these games are unrelated. Quake with a Cthulhu flavor had more brown tones, while DOOM TDA and Revelations clearly leaned toward green tones. As an artist, what did you feel working on this theme, and what unique touches did you bring to DOOM?
NE: Yeah we go through iterations to test things like this out – in the end Directors make this high level decisions for art direction. It was a really fun theme to work on for sure, the lovecraftian vibe is so mysterious and creepy – this project gave me the chance to dive deep into that world which was so fun!
MS: For the final battle with Prince Ahzrak, I believe there are inspirations from “The General Zapped An Angel.” When designing this scene, what did you want to show players, and do you think you succeeded? Could you explain a bit?
NE: Yeah we love that reference, in the same way it’s used within Evangelion (the concept team are big Eva fans). We thought it’d be a great way to show homage to it.
MS: Did you ever add something to the game inspired by your dreams? In the past, id Software had people like Sandy Petersen who did that. I wonder if this tradition still continues at id.
NE: Not personally, no.
MS: What was it like working with names like Emerson Tung and Hugo Martin? Could you share some of your experiences?
NE: Emerson is an amazing artist, he had a wealth of knowledge that got me so excited to learn and work on the project. He’s also a great lead and supported the concept team so well. Working with Hugo was an awesome experience, he is extremely passionate and excited, always gassing up our art! It is great having a director with a strong vision, it motivates the team to keep pushing the project along with strong direction.
MS: In recent years, artificial intelligence has become very popular. Some say AI makes things easier, while others argue it kills creativity and causes unemployment. As an artist, what are your thoughts?
NE: I havn’t experimented with it personally, havn’t really seen a use for it. We as a team are trying to make an experience, tell stories and share feelings we’ve experienced in our own lives. We are trying to innovate and create new art, and the process of making the art is where all this magic happens – I don’t see why we would want to make AI do this for us. It really defeats the purpose for me.
MS: And that sad day… Me, as a DOOM fan myself, when the Revelations DLC trailer was released, I was very excited. But when the layoff news from id Software came, my excitement vanished. I was deeply saddened, and because I felt bad for both the studio and you guys, I couldn’t play the game for days. I read online that some people were told not to come to the office that day, while others learned they were laid off while stuck in traffic. I don’t know if that’s true, I only read it. Could you share what you felt that day? Sometimes you feel that things are going badly, and sometimes everything seems to be going well but unexpected developments still occur. Did you expect something like this? I don’t want to upset you. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.
NE: So I moved back to Australia in September 2025, finishing my work with id. So i wasn’t at the studio around that time. Still the layoff news was really sad, a lot of friends from the studio were affected. People make huge, life-changing commitments to work on these teams. I felt frustrated, confused, a whole mixture of things.
MS: What do you think the future holds for id Software? Many comments suggest the studio has lost significant strength after so many experienced people were laid off.
NE: It is hard to say not being in the studio anymore – but I hope for the best, and that they can continue making awesome games. The Dark Ages team really poured a tonne of work into the game and DLC.
MS: What do you think about the DOOM fan community?
NE: They’re so excited and wholesome; I love it!
MS: What is your favorite id Software game and why?
NE: There’s something about Eternal that once I’m in the thick of it, sweating and panicking. It’s just a rush and so rewarding when you beat an arena.
MS: What are you doing on these days? Do you want to continue with games or would you consider working in the film industry? I’m sure you’ll join another major studio soon.
NE: I’m working freelance at the moment – for Ironwood Studios most of the time actually, they’re a great team and it’s been a lot of fun! I love working with indie developers too.
Thank you!
